A waterway that runs from Lake Biwa to Kyoto City. The first canal (8.7 km) takes in water at Mihogasaki, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, passes through a tunnel under Nagarayama, passes through the foothills of the northern part of the Yamashina Basin, passes through a tunnel again under Hinooka, and exits at Keage in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City. The second canal (7.4 km) runs through a tunnel on almost the entire north side, and merges with the first canal at Keage. From Keage, it heads west, flows south along the east bank of the Kamo River, and reaches Fushimi, while a branch line heads north from Keage along the foothills of Higashiyama, flows west through Shimogamo, and reaches Horikawa.
