Kishigawa

Japanese: 貴志川 - きしがわ
Kishigawa
This is a former town area in the southwest of Kinokawa City, in northern Wakayama Prefecture. It is located in the downstream area of the Kishi River, a tributary of the Kinokawa River. In 1955, the four villages of Higashi Kishi, Naka Kishi, Nishi Kishi, and Marusu merged to form a town. In 2005, it merged with the four towns of Uchida, Konagawa, Naka, and Momoyama to form Kinokawa City. The place name is derived from the name of the river. The Kishi River forms a leading gorge, and the area around Okuninushi Shrine in the south is also known as the Kishi River Line, and is known as a famous spot for Genji fireflies. In addition to rice, fruit trees are cultivated. The number of commuters to Wakayama City has increased, and residential development has progressed.

Kishi River

A river in the northern part of Wakayama Prefecture. The largest tributary of the Kinokawa River. It originates from Mount Koya, and in the upper reaches it flows southwestward, meandering along an old fault line, before flowing north through a valley near Nogami in the northwest of Kimino Town, and then joining the Yamada River and the Zakuro River, before flowing into the Kinokawa River in the western part of Kinokawa City. It is about 45 km long. There are traces of a battle for control of the river, and the area around the confluence with the Kinokawa River was once a flood-prone area.
