A canyon in the east of the Serengeti National Park in northern Tanzania. Nearly 2 million years ago, the area was a lake, but over the years, lake sediments and volcanic ash from the nearby Mount Ngorongoro accumulated (→Ngorongoro Crater), and then river erosion formed cliffs on both sides. The cliff deposits are up to 100 meters thick in some places, with five layers lying on top of the basalt bedrock. It is known as a treasure trove of anthropological material, and various mammal and human fossils, as well as Paleolithic tools, have been discovered there.

タンザニア北部，セレンゲティ国立公園東方にある峡谷。 200万年近く前は一帯は湖沼だったが，長い年月の間に湖水の沈殿物，付近のンゴロンゴロ山からの火山灰が堆積 (→ンゴロンゴロ噴火口 ) ，その後，川の浸食によって両側に崖が形成された。崖の堆積物は厚いところは 100mに及び，五つの層が基盤の玄武岩の上に重なっている。人類学的資料の宝庫として知られ，各種哺乳類や人骨の化石，旧石器時代の道具が発見された。
