The fourth Shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate. Son of Regent Kujo Michiie. His mother was Rinshi, the daughter of Grand Minister of State Saionji Kintsune. As he was a distant relative of Yoritomo, he was welcomed as Lord of Kamakura at the age of two, and was proclaimed Shogun in 1226. At the insistence of the regent Hojo Tsunetoki, who held real power in the Shogunate, he handed over the position of Shogun to his son Yoritsugu at the age of 28. Later, in 1251 , he was implicated in an incident in which the monk Ryogyo overthrew the Shogunate, and thereafter fell on hard times.
