A city in central Yamaguchi Prefecture. Incorporated as a city in 1929. Prefectural capital. Center of prefectural government, education, and culture. Located in the basin of the Fushino River, facing the Suo-Nada Sea to the south. The city center is in the Yamaguchi Basin and developed as a castle town of the Ouchi clan in the 14th century. Designated a regional base city in 1993, construction of the Yamaguchi Techno Park, which brings together cutting-edge technology industries, and a logistics complex are underway. Ouchi lacquerware and Yamaguchi Hagi ware are local specialties. It is home to Yamaguchi University, the remains of Ouchi culture such as the Joshinji Garden (historic site and scenic spot), historical sites of the Meiji Restoration, the five-story pagoda of Rurikoji Temple, and Xavier Memorial Church. It is served by the Yamaguchi Line, Sanyo Main Line, Shinkansen, Ube Line, and Chugoku Expressway, and the Sanyo Expressway branches off here. It is home to Yuda Onsen.
