Born: 1829 [Died] February 19, 1882. Kabuki actor. Stage name Yamatoya. Son of Iwai Hanshiro 7th. Leading female actor in the Tokyo theater scene in the early Meiji period. Succeeded to the stage name of Iwai Hanshiro 8th in 1872. He often played opposite Ichikawa Danjūrō 9th and Onoe Kikugoro 5th, and his best roles include Irokuya in "Kosode Soga Azamiironui" and Mizentai in "Ten'imushi Ueno Hatsuhana".
