Thin flatworm - Thin flatworm

It is a small marine animal belonging to the phylum Platyhelminthes, class Turbellaria, order Polycladida, family Polyplacodes. It is the most common species that inhabits coastal reefs throughout Japan, and can be found under boulders and on seaweed. Similar species in the same genus are found on the ocean floor at depths of over 100 meters. It is about 15-30 mm long and 5-10 mm wide, and moves by gliding along the surface of stones. Its body is long and slender, but its front end is round and flat. Its body color varies depending on its food, but its back is gray-brown or black-gray. Its ventral surface is gray-white, and the intestines and gonads branching out from the central mouth can be seen through the skin. It has small antennae near the front end, and a pair of black eyespots nearby.

扁形(へんけい)動物門渦虫綱多岐腸目ヤワヒラムシ科に属する海産小動物。日本各地の沿岸の磯にもっとも普通にすむ種類で、転石の下、海藻の上などにみられる。同属の近似種には100メートル以深の海底にも分布しているものがある。体長15～30ミリメートル、幅5～10ミリメートルぐらいで、石の面を滑るように移動する。体は細長いが前端は丸く扁平(へんぺい)。体色は食物によって異なるが、背面は灰褐色や黒灰色を帯びる。腹面は灰白色、中央の口から分岐する腸管や生殖腺(せん)が透けてみえる。前端の近くに小さい触角があり、その付近に1対の黒色の眼点群がある。
