〘Noun〙 A paper ornament in the shape of a dog. It was placed in the bedroom in the belief that it had the power to ward off evil spirits and demons, and was therefore also called Otoginu (fairy tale dog) or Tonoinu (night watch dog) . Modelled on the lions and komainu ( guardian lion dogs) of the Michodai (shrine stand ), they were given as gifts in pairs at weddings, the birth of a child, and shrine visits. In the past they were box-shaped and also called "inu-bako" (dog box), with a lid on top, inside which the bride would place her makeup tools and amulets. In the past, they were made in a lying position, but standing ones were made from the mid-Edo period onwards, and at first the faces were made to resemble children, but in the early modern period both the faces and bodies came to resemble dogs. *Goyudono Kami Nikki - February 14, 1477 (Bunmei 9) "Tomorrow's Gohomotsu (abbreviated) Onna wa Utachi yori yori inu hariko fuseimairu" Source: The Selected Edition of the Japanese Language Dictionary About the Selected Edition of the Japanese Language Dictionary Information |
