Taormina (English spelling)
A tourist and resort town on the east coast of Sicily in southwest Italy. It belongs to the Messina province in Sicily. Ancient name: Tauromenium. Inhabited by the Siculians since ancient times, the Greeks colonized the town in the 8th century BC, and it came under Roman control from around 210 BC. It was destroyed by Arabs (→ Saracens) in 902 and 962, and the inhabitants were massacred. Sulfur is produced in the area. Another product is marmalade. Mount Etna (about 3,320m) is located to the southwest, and the mountains approach the coast, creating a beautiful landscape. There are also the remains of famous Greek and Roman theaters, and a park with rare flowers. Population: 10,967 (2006 estimate).
