Water worm (Epiphanes senta)

Japanese: ミズワムシ(水輪虫) - ミズワムシ(英語表記)Epiphanes senta
Water worm (Epiphanes senta)
This rotifer belongs to the family Acanthidae. It is found in ponds and marshes throughout Japan, moving by crawling on objects, but sometimes floating. Depending on the conditions, it can cause large outbreaks. The body is long and sac-like, measuring 0.4-0.5 mm in total length. There are several funnel-like constrictions surrounding the body. Five ciliated bundles are lined up on the dorsal edge of the head disk, and there are four protuberances between the head disk and the ciliated ring. The mouth opens at the bottom of the funnel, and the mouth area is densely covered with cilia. The eyespots are colorless, and the legs are thick and short, with no protrusions. [Imajima Minoru]
