The phenomenon in which light is emitted when a charged particle travels through a transparent medium at a speed greater than the phase velocity of light in that medium (the speed of light in a vacuum divided by the refractive index of that medium). This light is called Cherenkov radiation or Cherenkov light. The blue light seen near the fuel rods of a nuclear reactor underwater is an example of this radiation. It was discovered by Cherenkov. It is similar to a shock wave in the air, and is emitted in a cone direction that forms an angle θ measured from the direction of the particle's movement (θ is given by cos θ = v/v', where v is the speed of light in the medium and v' is the particle speed). Cherenkov counters that use this radiation are devices that detect Cherenkov radiation using a photomultiplier tube and at the same time determine the energy of the particle from the angle of travel of the radiation. →Super-Kamiokande → Related topics Tam | Frank Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
