Jeongjo - Jeongso

Japanese:
Jeongjo - Jeongso
The 22nd king of the Joseon Dynasty. Reigned from 1776 to 1800. Together with his grandfather, Yeongjo, he built an era known as the renaissance of the Joseon Dynasty. As a child, he witnessed the tragic death of his father, Prince Sado, who was locked in a chest by Yeongjo. After ascending to the throne, he is said to have aimed to eliminate the strife between in-laws and factions in the court and to establish a thorough civil rule and royal authority. The year after his accession to the throne, he established the royal academy, Gyujanggak, and actively recruited scholars of illegitimate status to his cabinet. By appointing excellent scholars as brains one after another, regardless of party affiliation, practical learning that emphasized reality flourished instead of speculative Confucianism. He suppressed the control of local yangban and sirins over villages and strengthened the governing power of the court, and established the Jangyongyang Army, a military unit directly under the king, to directly seize military power. He made plans to build Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon and move the capital there, but he died shortly after it was completed, so the move was shelved.
