The port city and capital of Quintana Roo state in the Yucatan Peninsula in eastern Mexico. Formerly known as Payo Obispo, it has a population of about 40,000. It is located at the mouth of the Hondo River, which forms the border with Belize. It was built in 1899 to prevent illegal logging and smuggling. It has a hot, rainy climate and is frequently hit by hurricanes. It is located in the Selva region, and its main economic base is forestry and rubber plantations, with related industries located on the left bank of the Hondo River.
