Czech is the official language of the Czech Republic and is also spoken in parts of the Silesian region of Poland. It was also called Bohemian. It has about 10 million speakers. It belongs to the West Slavic group of Slavic languages along with Slovak, Polish, and Sorbian, and is particularly similar to Slovak. Its main characteristic is the fixed stress on the first syllable of words. The oldest words are found in Old Church Slavonic documents from the 11th century, and the period from then until the 14th century is called Old Czech, the 15th and 16th centuries are called Middle Czech, and the period from the 17th century onwards is called Modern Czech.
