Syagrius - Syagrius (English spelling)

Syagrius - Syagrius (English spelling)

A Gallic warrior from the late Roman Empire. Son of Aegidius (?-464), who served as the Gallic military commander under the Western Roman Emperor Majorian (reigned 457-461). After the assassination of Majorian, he did not recognize his father's successor and ruled the area of northern Gaul, centered around Soissons, as a de facto independent force, and succeeded his father's territory (464). Even after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, he was the last Roman power in Gaul, competing with the Germanic tribal kingdoms, but in 486 (or 487) he was attacked by the Frankish king Clovis and defeated near Soissons. He fled to the Visigoths in Toulouse, but the Visigoth king, who succumbed to Clovis's threats, handed him over to the Franks, where he was killed by Clovis' order, and his territory was annexed to the Frankish Kingdom.
