...The shipbuilding industry developed in the 19th century in the ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam, and the machinery industry developed further, beginning with marine engines. As a result of the fierce international competition in the shipbuilding industry, a merger was carried out with the aim of building mammoth tankers, which required huge investments, and in 1971 the Rijn‐Schelde‐Verolme conglomerate was established. Other famous companies include the vehicle industry in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the automobile industry (DAF) in Eindhoven, and the Fokker (aircraft) in Amsterdam.
