Japanese: ムギツク(麦突) - ムギツク（英語表記）Pungtungia herzi

A freshwater fish of the family Cyprinidae in the order Cyprinidae. It is also called Monto (Maruyama River, Hyogo Prefecture), Mugi (Yamaguchi Prefecture), and Ninasui (Oita Prefecture). It is distributed in Japan (Honshu west of Lake Biwa and the Yodo River system and northern Kyushu) and the Korean Peninsula. It lives in stony stagnant waters in the middle reaches of rivers. It hides under stones or in crevices in rocks, occasionally emerging to swim slowly along the sides of stones or other objects while searching for food. It feeds on small animals such as insect larvae that live on the bottom of the water or between stones. It is known to have the habit of making sounds underwater. The spawning season is May to June, and spawning behavior occurs in pairs of males and females.

コイ目コイ科の淡水魚。モント(兵庫県円山川)，ムギー(山口県)，ニナスイ(大分県)などとも呼ばれる。日本(琵琶湖･淀川水系以西の本州と九州北部)と朝鮮半島に分布。河川の中流域の石の多いよどみなどにすむ。石の下や岩の裂け目などに潜み，ときどき出て石などの側壁に沿ってゆっくり泳ぎながら餌をあさる。餌は水底や石の間などにすむ昆虫の幼虫などの小動物。水中で発音する習性のあることが知られている。産卵期は5～6月で，雌雄1対で産卵行動を行う。
