A Hungarian-born soldier and adventurer. He served in the Austrian Army, and in 1768-69 he participated in the Polish armed uprising against Russian interference in the internal affairs of the country, and was captured by the Russian army and exiled to Kamchatka. In 1771 he organized a rebellion centered around political exiles, and escaped by stealing a government ship. On the way he stopped off at Awa and Amami Oshima to stock up on food and water, and sent the famous "Letter of Hanbengoro" to the Dutch trading post in Nagasaki, warning against Russia's southward advance. After arriving in France via Macau, he tried to persuade the French government to start the colonization of Madagascar, but failed.

ハンガリー生れの軍人で冒険家。オーストリア陸軍に勤務，1768‐69年ロシアの内政干渉に対するポーランドの武装蜂起に参加してロシア軍の捕虜となり，カムチャツカに流刑。71年この地で政治流刑者を中核とする反乱を組織し，官船を奪って脱走。途中食料，水の供給のため阿波と奄美大島に立ち寄り，ロシアの南下を警告する有名な〈ハンベンゴローの書簡〉を長崎のオランダ商館あてに送った。澳門(マカオ)を経由してフランスに到着後，同国政府を説いてマダガスカル島の植民地化に着手するが失敗。
