In aesthetics, it is a concept that is treated in correlation with beauty. It is usually considered anti-aesthetic, rejecting aesthetic formation, and referring to something that causes discomfort by separating the content and form of a work. Since K. Rosenkranz established ugliness as one of the aesthetic categories in Ästhetik des Hässlichen (Aesthetics of Ugliness) in 1853, its positive value as an auxiliary means (concept) to highlight beauty has been discussed. However, these are judgments that divide a work into form and content, and are made by analogy from the ugliness of the content or material, and it can be said that another judgment intervenes in aesthetic judgment. In the aesthetics of B. Croce and others who see a work as an indivisible whole, as long as it is a work of art, it is beautiful, and ugliness is out of the question.
