He was one of the Rhenish liberals, along with Camphausen and Hansemann, in the early March period in Germany (the period before the 1848 Revolution). He was born in Dürken near Krefeld as the son of a yarn mill owner, and after dropping out of gymnasium, he took over the family business in 1830. Following the example of F. List, he advocated protective tariffs in the early March period. He also acquired a knowledge of philosophy and history, and was partially sympathetic to the ideas of Saint-Simon, advocating active social policies from an early stage. From 1841 onwards, he lived in Cologne, and served as a director of the Rhine Railway Company and a member of the Cologne Chamber of Commerce.

ドイツの三月前期(48年革命前の時代)の，カンプハウゼン，ハンゼマンと並ぶライン自由主義者の一人。クレーフェルト近郊のデュルケンに撚糸工場主の息子として生まれ，ギムナジウム中退ののち1830年から家業を継ぐ。F.リストにならって三月前期には保護関税を主張。また，哲学，歴史的教養も身につけ，サン･シモン思想に部分的に共鳴し，早くから積極的な社会政策を主張。41年以降はケルンに在住し，ライン鉄道会社取締役，ケルン商工会議所員等を歴任。
