Seiichi Izumi

Cultural anthropologist. Born in Tokyo. After graduating from Keijo Imperial University, he continued to conduct anthropological research and surveys at the same university, focusing on the Nanai people of Jeju Island and Manchuria (northeastern China). After World War II, he returned to Japan and became an assistant professor at the University of Tokyo in 1951, where he established the Department of Cultural Anthropology with Ishida Eiichiro. He expanded his research from Brazilian Japanese society to Andean prehistory, and promoted the University of Tokyo's Andean surveys from 1958 to 1969, playing a leading role in Japanese research on Latin American anthropology, especially in the field of prehistory. He was also active internationally, having been one of the earliest to promote exchanges with Korean academic circles, and his writing from an anthropological perspective covers a wide range of fields. He is the author of many works, including "Izumi Yasukazu Collected Works" (7 volumes, Yomiuri Shimbun, 1971-1972).

文化人類学者。東京に生まれる。京城(けいじょう)帝国大学卒業後、引き続き同大学で済州島、満州（中国東北）のナーナイ人などを対象に人類学の研究と調査を行う。第二次世界大戦後、日本に引き揚げ、1951年（昭和26）東京大学助教授に就任、石田英一郎とともに同大学の文化人類学教室の開設にあたる。ブラジル日系人社会からアンデス先史学へと研究を広げ、1958～1969年まで東京大学のアンデス調査を推進し、日本の中南米人類学研究、とくに先史学分野で指導的役割を果たした。韓国学界との交流もいち早く促進するなど国際的にも活躍し、また、人類学的観点からの文筆活動も広範な分野にわたる。『泉靖一著作集』（全7巻・読売新聞社　1971～1972）ほか多くの著作がある。
