This railway connects Dar es Salaam in eastern Tanzania with Kapiri Mposhi in central Zambia. Construction began in October 1970 with assistance from China, and was completed in October 1975. It is also called the Great Uhuru Railway (Uhuru means "freedom" in Swahili) because it was built to match the track width of Zambia's railway and freed the country from its dependence on the railway of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), which was then a racist white government. The total length is 1,860 km, of which 970 km is within Tanzanian territory. Most of Zambia's copper is exported via this route, and transportation has become easier for undeveloped areas on the Tanzanian side, and branch lines to iron ore and coal deposits in the southwest are also planned.
