A town on the upper Loire River in the Cher department in central France. Population 2,542 (1975). Located on a hill along the river, it is a strategically important point bordering the Nivernais region to the east and the Berry region to the west. During the Hundred Years' War, it was the frontline base of Charles VII, the "King of Bourges," who fought against the Burgundians. It retains rows of old houses and the remains of the 15th-century castle of the Count of Sancerre. During the Reformation, it became a base for the Calvinists early on and endured many trials, including the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, but in 1573 it was besieged by Catholic troops for nine months, and after food ran out and people starved to death, it was finally surrendered.
