Dahlmann, Friedrich Christoph
Born: May 13, 1785, Wismar
Died December 5, 1860. German historian and politician. He became a professor at the University of Kiel in 1812 and at the University of Göttingen in 1829. In 1837, he protested against the abolition of the constitution by the reactionary Hanover King Ernst Augustus I, and was expelled as one of the "Seven Professors of Göttingen". He was invited to the University of Bonn in 1842 and taught history and political science. After the March Revolution of 1848, he participated in the drafting of the German constitution, and led the Little Germany faction as a representative of Prussia in the Frankfurt National Assembly, but was unable to gain the support of the king or the parliament and was defeated. In March 1850, he attended the United Constituent Assembly in Erfurt, and in the summer of the same year, he was elected to the Prussian Senate and fought against the conservative forces, but to no avail, and he later retired from politics. His main works are The History of Denmark (3 volumes, 1840-43), The History of the English Revolution (44), and The History of the French Revolution (45). His Commentaries on German Historical Documents (30) were later taken over by G. Weitz, who has continued to expand and revise them to this day under the name Dahlmann-Weitz.

[Died] June 23, 1930. Tokyo German Jesuit priest. Indologist. One of the founders of Sophia University. Came to Japan in 1908. In 1914 he lectured German literature at the University of Tokyo, later becoming a professor. At Sophia University he taught Indian philosophy in addition to German literature. His major works include Nirvâna (1896), Buddha (98), Indische Fahrten (Travels in India) (1908), and others.

ドイツの歴史家,政治家。 1812年キール大学教授,29年ゲッティンゲン大学教授となり,37年反動的なハノーバー国王エルンスト・アウグスト1世の憲法破棄に抗議し,いわゆる「ゲッティンゲン七教授事件」の一人として追放された。 42年以来ボン大学に迎えられて歴史学と政治学を担当し,48年の三月革命後ドイツ憲法立案の議に加わり,フランクフルト国民議会でプロシア代表として小ドイツ主義派を指導したが,国王,議会の支持を得られず挫折。 50年3月エルフルトの連合制憲議会に出席,同年夏にプロシア上院に列せられ保守勢力に対抗して戦ったが益なく,のち政界を引退。主著『デンマーク史』 Geschichte von Dänemark (3巻,1840~43) ,『イギリス革命史』 Geschichte der englischen Revolution (44) ,『フランス革命史』 Geschichte der französischen Revolution (45) 。また『ドイツ史籍・史料解題』 Quellenkunde zur deutschen Geschichte (30) は,その後 G.ワイツによって継承され,『ダールマン=ワイツ』の通称で今日まで増補,改訂を重ねている。

ドイツ人イエズス会司祭。インド学者。上智大学創立者の一人。 1908年来日。 14年から東京大学でドイツ文学を講じ,のちその教授となった。上智大学ではドイツ文学のほかにインド哲学を教えた。主著『ニルバーナ』 Nirvâna (1896) ,『仏陀』 Buddha (98) ,『インドの旅』 Indische Fahrten (1908) ほか。
