Contagious bovine pleuropneumonia

Japanese: 牛肺疫 - ぎゅうはいえき(英語表記)contagious bovine pleuropneumonia
Contagious bovine pleuropneumonia
Contagious pneumonia of cattle. Legally-designated infectious disease of livestock. It is caused by Mycoplasma mycoides, a type of mycoplasma bacterium. Symptoms can be acute or chronic; the former causes fever, loss of appetite, coughing, runny nose, pneumonia, and diarrhea, and death in 7 to 30 days. It has invaded Japan three times in the past, but is currently completely absent. Strict quarantine at open port quarantine stations is mandatory when importing cattle. It is currently endemic in parts of Africa, the Asian continent, and Australia, and although a bovine pleuropneumonia vaccine is used as a preventative measure, early detection and culling is considered the most appropriate treatment.
