Ashton, Sir Frederick
Born: September 17, 1904 in Guayaquil
[Died] August 18, 1988. British choreographer and dancer from Sussex. A master known as the Shakespeare of ballet. He studied under L. Massine and M. Rambert, and choreographed his first piece in 1926, Tragedy of the Epic. After composing several pieces, he became the permanent choreographer for the Big Wells Ballet (later the Royal Ballet), and produced works such as The Fairy's Kiss (1935) and The Skaters (37). He went on to choreograph more than 80 pieces, including Symphonic Variations (46), Cinderella (48), Ondine (58), and The Two Doves (61), and provided works for many ballet companies as a visiting choreographer. He succeeded N. de Valois as artistic director of the Royal Ballet (63-70). In 1962, he was the first person in the ballet world to receive the title of knight. Other notable works include "The Dream" (1964) and "Monotones" (1965, 1966). In Japan, he is known as the choreographer of the films "The Tales of Hoffmann" (1950) and "Peter Rabbit" (1971).

British economic historian. Graduated from Manchester University. Professor at University College London from 1944 to 1954. Specializes in 18th century Britain. Takes the position of the continuity theory regarding the Industrial Revolution. Excellent research on individual industries such as the iron and coal industries. Author of many books, including The Industrial Revolution 1760-1830 (1948).

イギリスの振付師,舞踊家。バレエのシェークスピアともいわれた巨匠。 L.マシーン,M.ランバートに師事し,1926年『流行の悲劇』で初めて振付を行う。いくつかの作品を作ってのち,ビック・ウェルズ・バレエ団 (のちのロイヤル・バレエ団) の終身振付師となり,『妖精の接吻』 (1935) ,『スケートをする人々』 (37) などを発表。その後も『シンフォニック・バリエーション』 (46) ,『シンデレラ』 (48) ,『オンディーヌ』 (58) ,『二羽の鳩』 (61) など短編・長編合せて 80以上の作品を振付け,また客員振付師として多くのバレエ団に作品を提供した。 N.ド・バロアの跡を受継いで,ロイヤル・バレエ団の芸術監督に就任 (63~70) 。 62年にはバレエ界で初めてナイトの称号を受けた。代表作はほかに『夢』 (64) ,『モノトーンズ』 (65,66) など多数。日本では映画『ホフマン物語』 (50) や『ピーター・ラビット』 (71) の振付師として知られている。
