An old town in Shiso County, western Hyōgo Prefecture. Occupying the midstream of the Ibo River, most of the area is forested and produces lumber and woodwork products. Famous for producing rice for sake brewing. The main settlement developed as a castle town for the Akamatsu clan in the Middle Ages and the Honda clan in the Edo period, and is served by the Chugoku Expressway. In April 2005, it merged with Ichinomiya Town, Haga Town, and Chikusa Town in Shiso County to become a city, Shiso City. Area: 178.89 km2 . Population: 26,621 (2003). 兵庫県西部,宍粟(しそう)郡の旧町。揖保(いぼ)川中流域を占め,大半が山林で木材,木工品を産する。酒造米産地として有名。主集落は中世は赤松氏,江戸時代は本多氏の城下町として発達,中国自動車道が通じる。2005年4月宍粟郡一宮町,波賀町,千種町と合併し市制,宍粟市となる。178.89km2。2万6621人(2003)。
