A general term for physical education other than school physical education. It is mainly conducted within the scope of physical education administration. It refers to physical education conducted in the local community, workplace, and home, but it can also include commercial facility physical education that pursues profit and profit. The Judo instruction at the Kodokan established in 1882, the Japan Athletic Association Model Gymnastics Hall in 1893, and the YMCA's outdoor gymnasium in 1908 can be considered the forerunners of social physical education. After the Ministry of Education made social education the official term in 1921, the term social physical education also became common. Originally, it was a service for sports activities that people voluntarily participated in and carried out independently, and it refers to organized activities with a purpose and plan. From an administrative perspective, measures have been taken to develop facilities that can respond to the increasing and diversifying demand for sports since the 1970s, to train instructors, develop organizations, and provide necessary support.
