Dallas - Daras (English spelling)

A commercial and industrial city in northern Texas, USA. Population 1,188,580 (2000). Facing the Trinity River, the surrounding area is an irrigated cotton-growing region. As the area receives little rainfall, there are many reservoirs in the Trinity River system that provide water for the city's residents. Dallas is the center of finance, insurance, and wholesale trade in the southwestern United States, and is the seat of the 11th District Federal Reserve Bank of the United States. Industries such as textiles, weaving, petroleum refining, electronic parts, leather, food processing, aircraft, and soap and detergents are also well developed. The population has grown significantly since World War II, and the metropolitan population was about 290,000 in 1940, but grew to about 1,080,000 in 1960, about 2,970,000 in 1980, and over 4 million in 1990. As of 2000, it is the ninth largest in the United States, with a population of 5,221,801.

It was first built as a hut on the river in 1841, and became a town in 1856 and a city in 1871. It was named after Vice President George M. Dallas (in office 1845-49). With the arrival of the railroad in the 1870s, it flourished as a cotton trading center, and then developed further with the oil boom of the 1930s. The addition of the aircraft industry during World War II diversified Dallas' industrial activities. Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, which opened in 1974 between Dallas and Fort Worth, one of its satellite cities, is one of the largest airports in the world, and is the second busiest airport in the world in terms of annual flights (1997). In addition, educational institutions include the University of Texas at Dallas, Southern Methodist University, and Baylor University's School of Dentistry and School of Nursing. There are also many cultural facilities such as art galleries, museums, music halls, and opera houses. There are three large convention centers, and many conventions are held there every year. Dallas is also famous as the site of the Cotton Bowl, a national college football game. It was here that President Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963.

アメリカ合衆国、テキサス州北部の商工業都市。人口118万8580（2000）。トリニティ川に面し、周辺は灌漑(かんがい)による綿花地帯である。この地域は雨量が少ないので、トリニティ川水系に多くの貯水池があり、そこから市民の水を供給している。ダラスは合衆国南西部の金融・保険、卸売業の中心地であり、合衆国の第11地区連邦準備銀行の所在地である。また、繊維、織物、石油精製、電子部品、皮革、食品加工、航空機、せっけん・洗剤などの工業も発達している。第二次世界大戦以降の人口増加は著しく、1940年の都市圏人口は約29万であったが、60年には約108万、80年には約297万となり、90年には400万を越える都市圏へと成長した。2000年現在は522万1801人で合衆国第9位である。

　1841年に河岸に小屋が建てられたのが最初で、56年に町となり、71年に市となった。地名はジョージ・M・ダラス副大統領（在任1845～49）にちなむ。1870年代に鉄道開通とともに綿花の取引地として栄え、その後、1930年代の石油ブームによってさらに発展した。第二次世界大戦中に航空機工業が加わったことで、ダラスの工業活動は多様化した。1974年、衛星都市の一つであるフォート・ワース市との間に開港したダラス‐フォート・ワース国際空港は世界最大の空港の一つで、年間発着回数は世界第2位（1997）である。また、教育機関としてはテキサス大学ダラス校、サザン・メソジスト大学、ベイラー大学歯学部と看護学部などをあげることができる。美術館、博物館、ミュージック・ホール、オペラ座などの文化施設も多い。三つの大きなコンベンション・センターがあり、毎年数多くのコンベンションが開催される。全米大学フットボールのコットンボウルの開催地としても有名である。1963年11月22日にケネディ大統領が暗殺されたのはこの地であった。
