…After the implementation of the Jōkyō calendar in 1685 (Jōkyō 2), the astronomical part of the calendar became the job of the Edo Tenmonkata, and the Kamo family, i.e. the Kōtokui family, was only in charge of the calendar notes. Since Shibukawa Shunkai was the first Japanese to create the Jōkyō calendar, the Edo Tenmonkata came to play a major role in calendar creation, and by the end of the Edo period, eight families had been appointed to this Tenmonkata, including the Shibukawa family, the Ikai family, the Yamaji family, the Nishikawa family, the Yoshida family, the Okumura family, the Takahashi family, and the Adachi family.
