1824‐83 A modern Indian religious reformer. Also known as Mula Śaṅkara. At the age of 24, he joined the Sarasvati Order, which was based on ad-dualism. He argued that India should return to its ancient religious traditions, and raised the famous slogan "Return to the Vedas." He met Keshab Chandra Sen, one of the leaders of the Brahma Samaj, and was so influenced by him (1872) that he eventually founded his own Arya Samaj in Bombay (1875).
