The chemical formula is KIO ₃ . The normal salt and acid salt KH(IO ₃ ) ₂ are commonly known. The normal salt is a colorless monoclinic crystal. It has a slightly distorted perovskite (perovskite) type structure, CaTiO ₃ . Therefore, I is surrounded by six Os, and there are no independent IO ₃ ^{- s} . The interatomic distance I-O is 2.23 Å. It has transition points at 75°C and 220°C, and the highest temperature phase is a rhombohedral lattice. The room temperature phase exhibits strong birefringence and strong piezoelectricity. It has a melting point of 560°C (with decomposition). It is more stable than the chlorates and bromates, but will explode if heated or shocked when mixed with flammable substances such as organic matter.
