Power politics

Japanese: パワー･ポリティクス（英語表記）power politics

The view that the essence of politics, whether domestic or international (world) politics, is the struggle for power is the most common view of politics, which has inspired political realism since ancient times. Politics carried out from this perspective is called power politics, in which the acquisition, expansion, and maintenance of power are the norm for political behavior. The reason this term is used specifically in relation to international politics is that it lacks the structures inherent in international society, i.e., a central authority that guarantees common values and systems and procedures for conflict resolution, and therefore a state of anarchy prevails in which states can only achieve their national goals by exercising their power.

国内政治であれ国際政治(世界政治)であれ，政治の本質は権力闘争にあるというとらえかたは，古来，政治的リアリズムの思惟を触発してきたもっとも一般的な政治観である。この視点から遂行される政治をパワー･ポリティクス(権力政治)という。そこでは権力の獲得，拡大，維持が政治行動の規範となる。　この言葉がとりわけ国際政治に関連させて用いられるのは，国際社会固有の構造，すなわち共通の価値観と紛争解決の制度や手続を保証する中枢権力とを欠き，そのため諸国家はそのパワーの行使によってのみ国家目標を達成することができるという，いわばアナーキーな状態が支配的なためである。
