Kokusekiji Temple

Japanese: 黒石寺 - こくせきじ
Kokusekiji Temple
A Tendai sect temple in Mizusawa-ku, Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture. Also known as Kuroishidera. It is said that Sakanoue no Tamuramaro rebuilt the Yakushido Hall built by Gyoki, and Ennin constructed many temple buildings. It is located about 10km due south of the ruins of Isawa Castle, and is believed to have a connection with the castle. The principal image, a wooden seated Yakushi Nyorai statue with an inscription written in ink on the inside from 862 (the 4th year of the Jogan era), and a wooden seated monk statue (a statue said to be of Jikaku Daishi), are important cultural properties. The Somin Festival, which is held from the evening of January 7th on the lunar calendar until dawn the following day, is known as a strange festival.
