Alizarin - Alizarin (English spelling)

Alizarin - Alizarin (English spelling)

It is the main component of the pigment obtained from the roots of the madder plant, which can dye fabric a fast and beautiful Turkish red. It is one of the oldest natural dyes in the world. It has also been used in Japan as madder, but today it has been replaced by other synthetic dyes. Its chemical structure is 1,2-dihydroxyanthraquinone, and it is synthesized by fusing sodium anthraquinone-2-sulfonate with sodium hydroxide in air. The paint madder is an aluminum complex salt (chelate) of alizarin.

The chemical synthesis of alizarin (1868) by H. Caro, K. Grebe, and K.T. Liebermann in Germany and W.H. Perkin in England marked the beginning of what became a vast field of anthraquinone synthetic chemistry.
