Peter Elmsley

A British scholar of ancient Greek literature, he is a professor of ancient history at Oxford University. He took pioneering steps in 19th-century paleography and papyrus studies, such as collating the L manuscript (10th century) of Sophocles housed in the Medici Library in Florence and investigating the Herculaneum papyrus housed in the Naples Museum, but his main contributions are in the editing and annotation of ancient Greek tragedies and comedies. Following the basics of metrical theory and the principles of textual criticism established by the great British scholar R. Pawson in the late 18th century, Elmsley made a major mark in the fields of clarification of the phrasing and usage of ancient dramatic poets, and in the field of exegesis.

イギリスの古代ギリシア文学研究者。オックスフォード大学古代史教授。フィレンツェのメディチ家図書館収蔵のソフォクレスのL写本(10世紀)を校合したり，ナポリ博物館収蔵のヘルクラネウム･パピルスを調査するなど，19世紀の古文書学やパピルス学を先駆ける一歩を画しているが，主たる貢献は古代ギリシアの悲劇･喜劇作品の校訂と注釈に認められる。18世紀末のイギリスの碩学R.ポーソンが確立した韻律学の基礎と本文批評の原則に従って，エルムズリーは，古代劇詩人たちの措辞･語法の究明と，文意釈義の領域で大きな足跡を残した。
