An insect of the Diptera family Anthomyiidae. It is a well-known agricultural pest whose larvae burrow into the stems of onions, shallots, Chinese chives, garlic, etc. and cause damage. It is widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe and North America. In Japan, it is commonly seen throughout Hokkaido. It has also been recorded in Honshu and Kyushu, but has not occurred west of Kinki recently. It occurs two to three times a year in Hokkaido and four times in other regions. Adults are 5 to 7 mm long and have a gray-brown body. They overwinter as pupae and emerge in the spring. They begin laying eggs from the end of May, and the eggs are laid in the soil. 双翅目ハナバエ科の昆虫。幼虫がタマネギ,ラッキョウ,ニラ,ニンニクなどの茎に潜入して食害するので有名な農業害虫。ヨーロッパ,北アメリカなど北半球に広く分布する。日本では北海道全域にふつうに見られる。本州,九州にも記録があるが,最近では近畿以西では発生していない。北海道では年に2~3回,他の地方では4回発生する。成虫は体長5~7mm,体は灰褐色である。さなぎで越冬し,春に羽化する。5月末ころから産卵を開始,卵は土中に産みつけられる。
