This is a former town area in the northwest of Matsue City, in the northeastern part of Shimane Prefecture. In 1956 it merged with three neighboring villages to form Kashima Town, and in 2005 it merged with seven other cities and towns to form Matsue City. It is located at the mouth of the Sada River Floodway Canal, which connects Lake Shinji with the Sea of Japan, and faces a small bay. Since the Taisho period, port facilities have been expanded and improved, and it has become one of the three largest fishing ports in the prefecture. Horse mackerel, sardines, mackerel, and other fish are landed here, and the seafood processing industry, which produces canned goods and kamaboko, is also thriving.
