Date of birth and death unknown. A mathematician from the Wei to Jin dynasties of the Three Kingdoms period in China. In 263, he wrote an excellent commentary on the mathematical book "Nine Chapters on Mathematical Science." In the chapter on calculating the area of rice fields, he pointed out the inaccuracy of the use of the number 3 for pi, and considered the area and circumference of a circle to be the limit of the area and circumference of a regular polygon inscribed in it when the number of sides is increased. He calculated up to a regular 192-sided polygon and obtained (314 + 64/625)/100, and gave an even more precise value of (314 + 4/25)/100 = 3.1416. In the chapter on calculating civil engineering works, he also wrote one volume of "Nine Chapters on Mathematical Science," adding a volume on "Weight Differences." However, the latter was later lost, and the former was handed down independently as one volume of "Haidao Suanjing." The content involves solving surveying problems using the properties of similar triangles.
