...However, when people refer to Athos or Mount Athos today, they often refer to the entire peninsula as an autonomous state dedicated to the Greek Orthodox Church, rather than simply to the name of the place. This place has also been called the Holy Mountain (Ágion Óros) since it has been widely regarded as a holy place for the entire Orthodox world since the Middle Ages. It is unclear when the connection between Athos and monasticism began, and aside from the legend of its founding, which is filled with miracles, the most certain date of its founding is today 963, when the first full-scale comity monastery on Athos, Megistis Lavra, was founded with the support of the Byzantine emperor.
