In the history of English poetry, he has almost always been second only to Shakespeare, but while the latter mainly produced dramatic poetry, Milton made a huge mark in the field of epic poetry. His father was a cultured London merchant and notary. He seems to have had the means and understanding to give his son the best education. Milton went on to Cambridge University, where he immersed himself deeply in the European humanist tradition since the Renaissance, while at the same time inheriting the foundations of the ideas and beliefs of the emerging London bourgeoisie, from which he came, and surrendering himself to the rising wave of Puritanism. …
