Yugoslav poet and novelist. Born in Serbia. While working as a middle school teacher, he was active in the Communist Party and was arrested and imprisoned several times. During World War II, he escaped exile in Italy and joined the partisan army. After the war, he became a journalist and then a writer. At first, he used bold poetic language in works such as his surrealist collection of poems, Footprints (1928), but gradually he took on a socialist tendency. In his novel, Poetry (1952), he portrayed illegal activists living in Nazi-occupied Belgrade and questioned the "inevitability of history," which caused a stir.

ユーゴスラビアの詩人，小説家。セルビアの生れ。中学校の教師をしながら共産党の党活動をし，幾度も逮捕，投獄される。第2次大戦中，追放地のイタリアを脱してパルチザン軍に投ず。戦後は記者をへて作家に転じた。初め超現実主義的な詩集《足跡》(1928)などで詩的言語を大胆に用いたが，しだいに社会主義的な傾向をおびる。小説《詩》(1952)では，ナチス占領下のベオグラードに住む非合法活動家たちを描いて〈歴史の必然〉を問い，話題を呼んだ。
