Dabi

Japanese:
Dabi

Cremation. A transliteration of the Pali word jhāpeti (to burn, to burn). This funeral method was adopted primarily by Buddhists in ancient India, and the custom of respecting the remains and holding ceremonies arose, and later spread to areas where Buddhism had spread. The remains of the founder of Buddhism, Shakyamuni, were cremated, and eight of his remains were divided and enshrined. In Japan, when Buddhism was introduced, cremation was first practiced for monks (first by Dosho in 700), and later spread to emperors (first by Jito in 703) and Buddhist aristocrats, bringing about a change in the ancient funeral and burial system.
