Japanese: ミズメイガ(水螟蛾) - ミズメイガ

A general term for insects of the Nymphulinae subfamily of the Lepidoptera order, family Pyralidae. This is a small subfamily of the family Pyralidae, which has over 600 known species in Japan, with only 28 species currently known. The wingspan is about 1.5-3cm, and it mainly includes small, nocturnal species. Lepidoptera larvae generally feed on grass, leaves, stems, and fruits that grow on the ground, and when they parasitize aquatic plants, they burrow into stems or leaves and do not come into direct contact with water, but most water pylarvae are aquatic and parasitize aquatic plants. Therefore, many of them live in swamps and marshes, and in today's Japan, where development has progressed nationwide, the habitat of this subfamily is very localized.

鱗翅目メイガ科ミズメイガ亜科Nymphulinaeの昆虫の総称。日本産既知種が600種をこえるメイガ科のなかでは小さな亜科で，現在28種しか知られていない。翅の開張1.5～3cmくらいで，おもに小型，夜行性の種を含む。鱗翅目の幼虫は一般に地上に生えた草や木の葉，茎，果実などを食べており，水生植物に寄生する場合は茎や葉に潜り直接水に触れないが，ミズメイガの幼虫の多くは水生で，水生の植物に寄生する。したがって，沼沢地や湿地帯にすむものが多く，日本のように全国的に開発の進んだ現在では，この亜科の産地はひじょうに局所的となっている。
