A moth belonging to the family Noctuidae in the order Lepidoptera of the class Insecta. The larvae damage various cultivated plants, and have a strong tendency to prefer nightshade plants such as tobacco and peppers, so it has long been considered a tobacco pest. The wingspan is about 30 mm. The forewings are yellowish brown, the hindwings yellowish, and the outer edges are dark. In Japan, it is common in warm areas south of Honshu, and the moth appears in July and August. It is widely distributed in the tropical regions of Asia and Africa, as is the closely related cotton bollworm, H. armigera . The group of moths including the tobacco budworm and the cotton bollworm constitutes the subfamily Helicoverpa of the family Noctuidae, and many species are found in the inland grasslands of North America and the savannas of Africa, but are extremely rare in the forest zones of Japan, with only nine species.
