Thai military politician. Born into a family of low-ranking military officers. Graduated from the Military Academy in 1929. Became prime minister in 1957 with Sarit's backing, but handed the reins to Sarit in 1958, and became prime minister again after Sarit's death in 1963. With the backing of American aid, he promoted industrialization and development, and held power for 10 years. Although he called on the people to "encourage good deeds," he had little democratic inclination, and during his long rule he created the problems of clan politics, such as the appointment of relatives to the top. In October 1973, he was forced into exile after nationwide anti-government demonstrations calling for democratization.

タイの軍人政治家。下級軍人の家に生まれる。1929年陸軍士官学校卒業。1957年サリットの後ろ盾で首相に就任するが，1958年サリットに譲り，1963年サリットの死後，再び首相となる。アメリカの援助を背景に工業化と開発を進め，10年の長期政権を保持した。国民に〈善行のすすめ〉を呼びかけたが，民主主義的な志向は乏しく，長期政権のなかで，親族の登用など門閥政治の弊害を生み，1973年10月には，民主化要求を中心とする国民的規模の反政府デモにあい，亡命を余儀なくされた。
