Thai military politician. Born into a family of low-ranking military officers. Graduated from the Military Academy in 1929. Became prime minister in 1957 with Sarit's backing, but handed the reins to Sarit in 1958, and became prime minister again after Sarit's death in 1963. With the backing of American aid, he promoted industrialization and development, and held power for 10 years. Although he called on the people to "encourage good deeds," he had little democratic inclination, and during his long rule he created the problems of clan politics, such as the appointment of relatives to the top. In October 1973, he was forced into exile after nationwide anti-government demonstrations calling for democratization. → Related article Sarit Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
