However, the word "ryori" did not originally mean to cook food, and just as with other Chinese words that were introduced to Japan, the Chinese usage of the word "ryori" has continued to the present day to mean the processing of things. In Japan, the word "ryori" has been used in the same sense as it is today since the early Heian period, but the word "ryouri-nin" began to appear in the Muromachi period. In the following sections, we will briefly discuss the duties and history of chefs in China, Japan, and Europe.
