Japanese: 祈禱 - きとう

Prayer, in a broad sense, means all religious requests, prayers, and invocations. Prayer in this sense is a universal religious phenomenon. In this case, prayer can be thought of as a form of communication between believers and supernatural beings such as God or Buddha. Prayer can be broadly divided into two types: conversational and silent. Conversational prayer is prayer in which prayer words are recited vocally, while silent prayer is prayer in which prayer is thoughtfully prayed in one's mind. Of course, in both cases, various actions such as closing the eyes or joining the hands together are often performed in parallel.

祈禱は広義に解すれば，すべての宗教的祈願，祈念，祈りを意味する。この意味の祈禱は普遍的にみられる宗教現象である。この場合，祈禱とは，神や仏といった超自然的存在と信者との交流の一形態であると考えられる。祈禱はまず大別して，会話型と黙禱型の2類型に分けて考えることができよう。会話型とは声を用いて祈り言葉などを誦する祈禱であり，黙禱型とは心のなかで念じて祈る型である。もちろん両者とも付随的に，閉眼，合掌などさまざまな動作が並行的になされることもおおい。
