Died March 11, 994. Baghdad Arab writer. Particularly known as a master of anecdotal literature. Born the son of a judge, he served as a judge in various parts of Iraq, but lived a life full of ups and downs. In his later years, he devoted himself to lectures and writing in Baghdad. He wrote three anecdotes and also a collection of poems, but the latter has not survived. The most substantial collection of anecdotes is Kitāb nishwār al-Muḥādarah (Food for Conversation), which consists of 12 volumes, but only the first, second, and eighth volumes have been discovered. However, a version restored to 12 volumes based on citations in other documents was published in Beirut. He also wrote several other works, including al-Faraj ba`d al-shiddah (Pleasure Comes in Pain).

アラブの作家。特に逸話文学の大家として有名。法官の子として生れ，イラク各地で法官として勤めたが，起伏に富む生涯をおくった。晩年はバグダードで講話や著述に没頭した。3つの逸話集のほか詩集なども著わしたが，詩集は伝わらない。逸話集中，最も充実したものは『座談の糧』 Kitāb nishwār al-Muḥādarahで，12巻から成るが，第1，第2，第8の3巻しか発見されていない。しかし，他の文献に引用されたものにより 12巻に復元した版がベイルートで刊行された。ほかに『苦あれば楽あり』 al-Faraj ba`d al-shiddahなど数著を残した。
