Kalanchoe - Kalanchoe

Japanese:
Kalanchoe - Kalanchoe

A perennial succulent plant of the Crassulaceae family (APG classification: Crassulaceae). It is widely distributed in the tropics, including Madagascar and Africa. A horticultural variety of K. blossefeldiana V.Poelln., also known as Benibenkei, is widely cultivated and commonly known as Kalanchoe. The flowers have four petals and grow in clusters at the end of the peduncle. In recent years, there has been progress in breeding, and the flower colors have become more abundant, including peach, red, orange, and yellow, and there are many dwarf potted varieties. Some varieties have plant patents, and self-propagation is prohibited. It can be easily propagated by seed or cuttings, but cuttings are usually used. The plant will root in about three weeks if it is cut into river sand in June and placed in partial shade. After rooting, transplant into a No. 3 pot and pinch off the top in August or September, which will result in many branches and blooming the following spring. It is relatively resistant to cold and can withstand temperatures as low as 0°C, but should be grown indoors during the winter. It is also a hardy plant, and grows well in sunny, well-drained soil.

The original Kalanchoe species originated from Mount Tsaratanana (2,880 meters) in the north of Madagascar, where it was discovered by a French expedition. German botanist von Poernitz recognized it as a new species, and in 1934 gave it the scientific name Blossfeldiana in honor of the Blossfeld Company, which was involved in its import and cultivation. Improvement began in Germany, and the dwarf Tom Thumb variety developed by the American company Doernheim became widespread.
